Human Design is a synthetic symbolic system created in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu — born Alan Robert Krakower in Montreal in 1948 — who described its origin as an eight-day download from a non-physical voice during a retreat on Ibiza. He spent the rest of his life until his death in 2011 systematizing the material and teaching it. The system is now one of the more widely used modern symbolic frameworks, particularly among women aged 25-45 in the English-speaking world, and continues to grow on social media.
What Human Design synthesizes is unusually ambitious: the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu chakra system (modified from seven to nine centers), Western tropical astrology, and a vocabulary borrowed from quantum physics (correctly identified as metaphorical, not literal). The result is the bodygraph — a diagram with nine geometric shapes connected by 36 channels, into which your birth datum is mapped to produce a Type, an Authority, a Profile, and a network of defined and undefined energies.
- Created: 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), Canadian/American.
- Five Types: Manifestor (~9% of population), Generator (~37%), Manifesting Generator (~33%), Projector (~20%), Reflector (~1%). Each Type has a strategy and a signature emotion.
- Nine centers: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart/Ego, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Root. Modified from the Hindu seven-chakra system.
- 64 gates: Each gate corresponds to one I Ching hexagram. Lines on the I Ching hexagrams (6 per hexagram) appear as 384 total reading points.
- Authority: Seven decision-making strategies (Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, Lunar) determine how each person is supposed to make aligned decisions. [Ra Uru Hu]
The five Types
Type is the headline of any Human Design reading — the first thing every reader learns. The five Types describe how a person is meant to engage with energy and decision-making:
- Manifestor — initiates new things, doesn't need permission, strategy is "to inform." About 9% of the population.
- Generator — sustained energy worker with defined Sacral center, strategy is "to respond" rather than initiate. About 37%.
- Manifesting Generator — Generator with motor-to-throat connection, strategy is also "respond" but speed and multi-passion are signatures. About 33%.
- Projector — perceiver and guide, undefined Sacral, strategy is "wait for invitation," signature is success and recognition. About 20%.
- Reflector — completely open chart, no defined centers, strategy is to wait through a lunar cycle before major decisions. About 1%.
The percentages are derived from real distributional statistics on planetary positions at birth — they're not arbitrary. The interpretive meaning attached to each Type is the system's own construction, but the math behind the Type assignment is consistent and reproducible.
How Arcana Origin uses Human Design
Arcana Origin computes your full bodygraph: Type, Authority, Profile, defined and undefined centers, conscious and unconscious sun gates, and the 32-channel network. The bodygraph is read in standard Human Design vocabulary — drawn from Ra Uru Hu's original teaching and refined through the work of teachers like Karen Curry Parker and Chetan Parkyn whose interpretations are more accessible.
Where Human Design earns its place in a multi-tradition reading is in its internal triangulation. Because the system borrows from I Ching, Kabbalah, chakras, and Western astrology, your bodygraph will frequently agree with what those source traditions say about you directly. When your Human Design Type is Projector and your Western tropical Sun is in Virgo and your I Ching primary hexagram is 57 (The Gentle), the Convergence layer reports the agreement — three independent readings telling the same story.
What's honest, what to hold lightly
Honest: Human Design is internally consistent, derived from a clear set of correspondences, and produces stable readings across software implementations. The Type assignment math is real and reproducible. Many people find the Type and Authority categories practically useful — Generators respond rather than initiate; Projectors wait for invitation; Manifestors inform rather than seek permission. As life-design heuristics these often work.
Hold lightly: the "quantum physics" framing in Ra Uru Hu's original teaching uses physics vocabulary metaphorically and is not testable by physics. The origin-story claims (eight-day download from a non-physical voice) are part of the system's self-presentation, not documented history. The promise that following your strategy will reliably produce specific life outcomes — wealth, success, relationships — overclaims the data we have. Use the system as one symbolic input among many. Arcana Origin treats it that way.
