Maya Tzolk’in calendar — glyphs of the twenty day signs in the sacred 260-day count.
The Tzolk’in weaves twenty day signs with thirteen tones into 260 unique days.

In the Maya tradition, the day you were born has a living character — a day sign (or nahual) drawn from the sacred 260-day calendar called the Tzolk’in. There are twenty day signs, from Imix the crocodile to Ajaw the sun, and each is paired with a tone from 1 to 13 that sets its intensity and role.

Together, sign and tone place you on one of 260 unique days — your kin. The Maya read this as a clue to your temperament, your gifts, and the energy you carry into the world.

A note on method

This calculator uses the Goodman-Martínez-Thompson (GMT) correlation — the standard used by Mayanist scholars and the living day-keepers of highland Guatemala. It is not the "Dreamspell" system invented in the 1980s, which assigns different signs. If you've seen another date elsewhere, that's usually why.

Frequently asked

What is a Mayan day sign?

A Mayan day sign (nahual) is your day in the Tzolk’in, the 260-day sacred calendar. There are 20 day signs — Imix, Ik’, Ak’b’al, K’an, Chikchan, Kimi, Manik’, Lamat, Muluk, Ok, Chuwen, Eb’, B’en, Ix, Men, K’ib’, Kaban, Etz’nab’, Kawak, and Ajaw — each carrying a distinct character. Your sign is paired with a tone from 1 to 13.

What is the galactic tone (1–13)?

Each day in the Tzolk’in carries a number from 1 to 13 called the tone. The tone modulates the day sign: low tones (1–4) are about beginnings and gathering force, the middle tones build and balance, and high tones (10–13) bring culmination and completion. Your tone and sign together define your kin — one of 260 day-energies.

Why does this differ from other Mayan calculators?

Many popular apps use the "Dreamspell" or "13-Moon" system created by José Argüelles in 1987, which shifts the count and even handles leap days differently. This calculator uses the Goodman-Martínez-Thompson (GMT) correlation — the one used by archaeologists and by traditional Maya day-keepers in Guatemala today. The two systems often give different signs for the same birthday.
