Chaldean numerology is the older, rarer cousin of the popular Pythagorean system. It traces to ancient Babylon and was carried into the modern world by the Victorian occultist Cheiro. Where Pythagorean numerology assigns letters values 1–9 in alphabetical order, Chaldean assigns them by sound and vibration — and it never uses 9, which it holds sacred.

It also reads two numbers, not one: the compound number (the full total, 10 and above) carries its own esoteric meaning, while the single root (reduced to 1–9) gives the underlying nature. The compound is said to describe the forces around you; the root, the force within.

Which name should you use?

Chaldean tradition reads the name you are known by — the one people actually call you — rather than your full legal name, because that's the vibration the world responds to. Enter whatever you go by day to day.

Frequently asked

How is Chaldean numerology different from Pythagorean?

Two main differences. First, the letter values: Pythagorean assigns 1–9 in plain alphabetical order, while Chaldean assigns 1–8 based on the vibration of each sound, never using 9 (held sacred). Second, Chaldean reads the compound number (the full total) for its own meaning before reducing to a single root, whereas Pythagorean usually reports only the reduced digit.

Why does Chaldean numerology never use the number 9?

In the Chaldean system the number 9 is considered sacred — associated with the divine and the infinite — so it is never assigned to a letter. Letters carry values from 1 to 8 only. The number 9 can still appear as a final reduced total; it simply is never the value of an individual letter.

What is a compound number?

The compound number is the full sum of your name's letters before it is reduced to a single digit — for example 19, 23, or 37. In Chaldean numerology each compound number from 10 upward carries a distinct esoteric meaning (often illustrated with a tarot-like image), describing the outward forces and fortunes around the name. The compound is then reduced to a single root (1–9) for the inner nature.

Does Chaldean numerology use master numbers?

No. Cheiro's single numbers run from 1 to 9, and he reads 11 and 22 as compound numbers with their own meanings, not as master numbers. So they reduce like any other total: a name adding to 29 gives 2+9 = 11, then 1+1 = 2. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 belong to the Pythagorean system.
